Importing growing media into the EU

ImageImporting growing media into the EU

Plant-based growing media cross borders every day, but they are checked carefully because they can carry pests and diseases. If you plan to import Banraw Peat into the European Union, here is an overview of what to prepare.

This is a general guide, not legal advice. Plant health rules change, and requirements can differ by country and product. Always confirm the current rules with your customs broker or the plant protection authority in the importing country before you ship.

Documents that usually travel with the shipment

  • Phytosanitary certificate. Issued by the plant protection authority in India after inspection, it confirms the goods meet the importing country's plant health requirements.
  • Certificate of origin. Shows where the goods were made and may affect import duty.
  • Commercial invoice and packing list. Describe the goods, quantities, weights and value.
  • Bill of lading. The shipping document for sea freight.
  • Lab report. Many buyers ask for recent results for pH, EC and moisture, and sometimes for contaminants.

Checks at the border

EU plant health rules control the entry of plant products and growing media from outside the EU. Shipments may be inspected on arrival, and the paperwork is checked against the goods. Missing or incorrect documents are the most common cause of delays.

Product and packing points to agree with your supplier

  • The exact product description and customs code (HS code) to use on all documents
  • Moisture content at the time of shipping
  • Packaging and pallet treatment; wooden pallets usually need to be heat-treated and marked under ISPM 15
  • Labels in the language of the market where the product will be sold

Plan ahead

Allow time for inspection and certificates before the container is loaded, and share copies of all documents with your customs broker before the ship arrives. A clear set of papers keeps your growing media moving.
